"I have always used Leveller... in my honest opinion, it's well worth the money if you're going to spend any great deal of time doing heightfield modeling."

|
"Leveller is an excellent, functional application, with plenty of features...
a lot of
great import/export features, many good filters, and some decent
painting tools...
I mainly use it for import/export, as it has great file support, for
blending different terrains, as it has 16-bit cut/paste/blending support, and
for some of its nicer filters and plug-ins.

"We recently had a chance to put Leveller to work creating terrains for our
latest product, Microsoft Motocross Madness 2.
"The results turned out really good... Leveller
proved to be a very useful tool in our production of the game.
Thank you for making it available.
"Each terrain was created using a combination of
Photoshop, Leveller, and 3D Studio (for terrain textures).
"Not only did Leveller save us time, it performed functions we couldn't find
elsewhere. For example, when attempting to displace very tall terrain using
a standard greyscale image, the results turned out very bumpy. We
were able to smooth the areas that needed it most without having to smooth
the entire terrain. This proved very helpful when tuning the races."

-- Robb Rinard, Rainbow Studios

|
"We're working on a scene with Mount St. Helen's for an upcoming magazine
ad, and we used Leveller to do some preprocessing of the data.
"I'm able to edit the DEM in Leveller, and resave it without
WCS's knowledge. Then, I just hit force
redraw in WCS, and bam, updated DEM.
Works really slick, and I think quite a few of our users are going to
be very happy to use this tool."

-- Chris "Xenon" Hanson,
World
Construction Set developer, 3DNature LLC

|

"I can also highly recommend Leveller...
This is a superb heightfield editor that works at full precision and allows
export to WCS in native WCS .elev format (as well as a host of others).
Well worth the money... and there's a
downloadable demo if you want to check it out first."

-- Adam Hauldren,
WCS user

|
"I have been a dedicated Leveller user for several years now, and am
still absolutely enthralled with this program. I find it useful,
intuitive, fast and slick... For terrain creation and editing there is
simply none better."

-- Robert Hoover,
Terragen user

"Thought that you might be interested to know that with the considerable
help of Leveller, I was able to win the October [2000]
Terracon Contest with "Meet The Ancestors" (image at left).
I haven't learnt a fraction of what Leveller can do, but it is such a
friendly application to get on with, that excellent results are possible
almost straight away.
All the terrain (originally a USGS DEM) manipulation for "Meet The
Ancestors" was done with Leveller.

-- Martin Childs, Terragen user
|
"Leveller is an excellent program! ...I can design the landscape as I want it to
look, see how it will look with the shaded preview, make any final touches
and export it to POV-Ray code right there from the menus."

-- John Mellerick

 |
"If you
really want to get into it, might I recommend registering Leveller,
which will allow you to do so many
terrain modifications your eyeballs will pop out."

-- Sean O'Malley,
Terragen user

"I found your tool an excellent one to make terrains for the ActiveWorlds
virtual reality program."

"Congratulations on a superb program and the best aftersales service I have
ever come across."

-- Mick Hazelgrove

"I really love Leveller! It's an excellent program, and very efficient."

-- Alex Magidow

|
"Excellent piece of software -- though it (Leveller) can be used with
numerous 3D packages, I know that POV-Ray users have long
been needing a utility such as this."

"I'm lost without Leveller."

-- Steve Taylor, Terragen user
|
"Leveller is a wonderful tool that is easy to use, both for creating
terrains and abstract images. I have been using it for some years, and
it keeps on getting better! It is indispensable for working with BMRT,
Bryce, Terragen, and WorldMachine. There
is nothing remotely comparable, in either capabilities or ease of use. Thanks, Ray!"

-- Mandi Blais, artist
|
"...I would definitely get a copy of Leveller..."

-- John Swafford, WCS user
|
"...if you work with heightfields
and you run on Windows, you must have this program."

-- Ronald L. Parker, POV-Ray patch coordinator

"In my mind, it (Leveller) is really a must-have for heightfield work. Well done!"

-- Dan Connelly

"I had an idea that one could recreate fine art using heightfields.
The group of fairies wouldn't have been possible without Leveller.
I'm amazed at how much of a true 3D look I was able to obtain."

"What an amazing tool...! I couldn't believe my eyes when I imported a
huge DEM file (10Mb) and let Leveller color the map... that is one of the
most difficult things to get right...
I tested the POV-Ray options: excellent!"

I spent quite a while looking for heightfield tools to use with
POV-Ray. I had collected quite a few when I found a link to your site. I
am really glad I did. Leveller incorporates many of the other tools that
had been recommended to me. It's also easy to learn and use.
I'm also very pleased to get a letter informing me of known bugs. It's a
pleasant change from the customer support I've seen on a lot of products.

I'm writing to say "Thank you" for Leveller. As a novice computergraphic
spacescapes artist I have found Leveller to be invaluable in creating
life-like landscapes from other worlds. I especially appreciate the crater
tool -- there's nothing else like it!
Recently one of my images took an "Honorable Mention" in a competition
presented by the Digital Image Generation Shop (DIGS), Scientific American,
The Boeing Company, and Space Center Houston, among others. This image is
part Leveller, part Bryce 4, and part Paintshop Pro.

Just a short note to let you know that I'm extremely excited
with my first results from Leveller 1.0. I've been working on
a project for over a year and was never satisfied with my
results regarding texturing heightfields. That is, until now.
Thanks for your wonderful tool. I believe I've played with every heightfield
tool available. Yours is the only one that provides the simplicity, features
and import/export formats I've needed.
The more I work with Leveller 1.0, the more impressed I become.

Here is some unsolicited feedback on my experience with Leveller.
It's definitely a quality piece of software. On my PII-300
machine, it's plenty fast. The various detail/degredation speed tuning
options are useful. I have not looked at the 1.0 demo yet. Good luck
on the commercial release!

Hi,
Wanted to say thanks for the program. I've really had a bit of fun with it!
The trees and foreground heightfield were done
in Leveller as was the image used in the texture for the aforementioned.
The background mountains were done in HF-Lab. Various image editors were
used to process the additional textures. The final image was rendered in POV-Ray.

The attached image is a little "Thanks" for your marvellous
program... [snip]
In my image the basic spiral structure of the heightfield is set up in
POV-Ray. Then this is where Leveller comes into the game: after importing
it is further processed by the Wavy Terrain plug-in (which gives the
"depth"), then smoothed several times and scaled appropriately. All of this
Leveller does in such an illustrative manner, which only may be reached
in HF-Lab yet, but handling Leveller is much easier.

Thank you for your terrific heightfield utility. I have needed
something like this for a while, and it is a dream to work with. To make
this (picture), I used Leveller to import a TGA and rendered it in POV-Ray. It might be
the title screen for a new port of the Doom engine that my team is
working on, and that is why it's in the Doom palette.

I found your great heightfield modeler in CompuServe's
POV-Ray forum. Very easy to use, very fast, and on final
very simple to see complex heightfields. :-)
Three minutes behind my screen and I produce a very good world.
Sincerely, thanks a lot for your work.

I have been receiving e-mail update notices of your
Leveller program and feel that it would be very useful
for CompuServe members.
I will be uploading it to library section 8 "Windows Utilities",
in the POV-Ray Forum on CompuServe, the official home of the
POV-Team and POV-Ray.
Please keep up the good work on this much-needed program.
Prior to Leveller, I think most people were using either
John P. Beale's MS-DOS program HF-Lab or just using POV-Ray
(sometimes in conjunction with FractInt) to generate heightfields.
I thank you for your efforts.

This is a quick trace I did using Leveller. It's a union
of the Wavy Terrain and the Mount Fractal plug-in. I did the union in Moray
and the trace with POV-Ray. I did the union in Moray so that I could have
different textures for each heightfield. The beetles and flowers can be
downloaded from the Moray site; I don't remember who contributed them.
It's not a great trace but I was so excited at actually having success
with a heightfield that I had to send it to you. Before Leveller I would
create a heightfield, see what it looks like after it renders, decide what
it looks like, and then create the rest of the picture around it. Now I
can actually decide what kind of picture I want to create, open Leveller
and BAM... there it is.
I've had more success with Leveller than with any other heightfield
utility I've ever used. I think it's great that you can see the resulting
terrain next to the bitmap file you are adjusting. I'm finally understanding
how the color schemes look when translated into a heightfield. My trial
and error technique with a paint program got me nowhere.
Keep up the great work! Thanks for Leveller!

Ok.. This is what I did.. Not a SERIOUS bug, mind you...

Other than that, this is an EXCELLENT program.
It's rated as an Editor's pick on my site.
=) Keep up the good work!

The addition of OpenGL is nice (took me awhile to find it).
All in all, one of the better terrain editors I've seen.

I just downloaded Leveller, and it's fabulous for generating VRML ElevationGrids.
Here's what I do: I export from Leveler as an 8-bit Targa file, bring
it into Paint Shop Pro and save it as a PGM (portable greyscale map, ASCII
format). Then I run it through a little utility I wrote called pbm2wrl,
and out comes an ElevationGrid.
Note: Leveller 1.3 now provides full export support for VRML 97/2.0.
