Hi,

Wanted to say thanks for the program. I've really had a bit of fun with it!

The trees and foreground heightfield were done in Leveller as was the image used in the texture for the aforementioned. The background mountains were done in HF-Lab. Various image editors were used to process the additional textures. The final image was rendered in POV-Ray.

In my image the basic spiral structure of the heightfield is set up in POV-Ray. Then this is where Leveller comes into the game: after importing it is further processed by the Wavy Terrain plug-in (which gives the "depth"), then smoothed several times and scaled appropriately. All of this Leveller does in such an illustrative manner, which only may be reached in HF-Lab yet, but handling Leveller is much easier.

This is a quick trace I did using Leveller. It's a union of the Wavy Terrain and the Mount Fractal plug-in. I did the union in Moray and the trace with POV-Ray. I did the union in Moray so that I could have different textures for each heightfield. The beetles and flowers can be downloaded from the Moray site; I don't remember who contributed them.

It's not a great trace but I was so excited at actually having success with a heightfield that I had to send it to you. Before Leveller I would create a heightfield, see what it looks like after it renders, decide what it looks like, and then create the rest of the picture around it. Now I can actually decide what kind of picture I want to create, open Leveller and BAM... there it is.

I've had more success with Leveller than with any other heightfield utility I've ever used. I think it's great that you can see the resulting terrain next to the bitmap file you are adjusting. I'm finally understanding how the color schemes look when translated into a heightfield. My trial and error technique with a paint program got me nowhere.

Keep up the great work! Thanks for Leveller!

I just downloaded Leveller, and it's fabulous for generating VRML ElevationGrids.

Here's what I do: I export from Leveler as an 8-bit Targa file, bring it into Paint Shop Pro and save it as a PGM (portable greyscale map, ASCII format). Then I run it through a little utility I wrote called pbm2wrl, and out comes an ElevationGrid.

Note: Leveller 1.3 now provides full export support for VRML 97/2.0.
